Internet Movie Database

The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) is a wonderful movie site. You can get information on more than 150,000 movies at this site.

Task 1

Visit The Internet Movie Database and have a look at the homepage.
  • What is currently the most popular movie in the US?
  • How much money has this movie made?
  • What is it about?
  • Would you like to see it?

Task 2

Do a search on my favourite movie: The Shawshank Redemption
  • Watch the trailer for the movie.
  • What is the movie about?
  • What score does the movie get out of 10? (This shows how good IMDB users think a movie is)
  • Who are two of the main actors in this movie?
  • Who directed the movie?
  • Look at the reviews for this movie. In general, what do IMDB users think of this movie?
  • Would you like to see this movie?

Task 3
  • The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) has a list of the top 250 most popular movies (as voted for by many thousands of IMDB users). This is a great place to find good movies to watch. Look at the list. How many of the top 10 have you seen?
Task 4
  • Find a movie you have always wanted to see. Maybe recommended by a friend. Or use the Top 250 list for ideas. Take a few minutes to see what IMDB users and reviewers have to say about the movie you chose. What score does it get out of 10? Do you still want to see it?
Task 5
Time for another search:
  • How many Oscars has Angelina Jolie won?
  • When was Tom Cruise born?
  • When did actress Grace Kelly die?
  • Take a few minutes to search for some of your own favorite actors and actresses.

Task 6
Finally, do a search for one of your own favorite movies. Do some research into the movie .
  • Who was the director?
  • Who acted in it?
  • Was it nominated or did it win any awards? (e.g. an Oscar)
  • Where was the film set?
  • Where was it filmed?
  • What is the movie about (its plot)
  • What is an interesting fact about this movie? Look for “Trivia” under “Fun Stuff”
  • What is a quote from this movie. Look for “Quotes” under “Fun Stuff.”
  • What are other people saying about this movie? Look at “user comments” and “reviews”.
  • What score out of 10 do IMDB users give this movie?
Task 7
  • Write a short description of your favourite movie on this web site using the information you learned.  What is is about?  Who acts in it?  What are some interesting facts about the movie?  Why do you like it so much?

Plan a day out in London or New York

Task 1:  Research
You are going to plan a day out in London or New York with a partner.

Look at the different activities you can do in your city.  Your plan may include shows, museums, restaurants, clubs, famous sights or anything else you can find.

You should consider the best time to do the activity (morning, afternoon, evening, night)

Task 2:  Write your plan

Type your plan in the following format, including a reason for your choice:

7:30 am - 8: 30 am:
Have breakfast at the Central Park Delhi next to Central Park.  This looks like a really nice restaurant.  We'll be trying out New York bagels.

8:30 - 9:30 am:
Go roller blading in Central Park.  Central Park is America's most popular urban park.  It is 4 km's long and 1 km wide.  We'll go roller blading to get some exercise and then we'll relax for a while at the lake in the middle of the park.

9:30 am - 11:30 am
Go shopping on Madison Avenue.  This is the best know place in New York to go shopping.  It has many famous shops like Tiffany's.  We'll be shopping for clothes and shoes. We'd also like to buy a camera.  The American dollar is low at the moment so we are hoping things will be quite cheap.

And so on...

Task 3: Find pictures

Find some pictures to show some of the places you will visit.

Task 4:  Look at everyone's tours

Read everyone else's tours.   Leave comments on what you think of each tour.  You will need to decide who has the best tour!
